In Uganda there are many hairdressing salons most especially in the capital city Kampala and this has become a very lucrative business for the majority of the women who have ventured into this business. Women of all walks of life visit these salons everyday and most especially on weekends when people usually have big functions to attend like weddings, introductions, parties, etc. However, it has come to my noticed that while some salons fill up with customers, others do not get patronage. Yet, they are expected to pay rent at the end of every month. If say I owned a salon with extra space and rent per month was Ug.shs.500,000 inclusive of utilities, I would start a business called ‘Rent a chair’ then advertise to various hairdressers that they can come to my salon and rent a chair.
In essence, they will rent a chair in my salon. I would then schedule my salon to open everyday from Monday to Saturday (6 working days) and on any given day with a maximum of at least 10 hairdressers to rent a chair, source for their own customers and come with their own kits, I would provide the water and dryer machines. At the end of every day regardless of how much they have made, each hairdresser would have to pay me not less than Ug.shs.10,000 for that chair and at the end of the week each hairdresser would be paying me Ug.shs.60,000 i.e. a total of 10 hairdressers would be paying me Ug.shs.600,000 at the end of the week and in four weeks (a month) I would have earned about Ug.shs.2,400,000.
I would pay my rent of Ug.shs.500,000 and remain with a balance of Ug.shs.1,900,000 and in addition to my own customers I would have made a big profit and this would mark the beginning of my journey to becoming an Entrepreneur. In conclusion therefore, I would propose that for those hairdressers who do not have that many customers and are required to pay rent, with this arrangement they can workout the expenses and then try out this kind of business proposal. It would also be a new business venture for the hairdressers already successful in the salon business. Ok its wishful thinking right? I cannot believe I wrote this proposal for an Entrepreneur competition I participated in and they still did not buy it. Life!
